A single bead from the Himalayan foothills has found its way to the necks of sages, students, business owners and homemakers alike. Yet very few people who wear Rudraksha know why they chose that particular bead, or whether they are wearing it the right way.
Rudraksha is not a fashion accessory, and it is not a universal lucky charm. According to Vedic tradition, every Rudraksha mukhi carries a distinct energy linked to a deity and a planet, and it works best when it is matched to the wearer's need and chart. In this guide, I, Anjan Shastri, explain what each mukhi stands for, how to choose the right one, and how to wear it with proper vidhi.
The word Rudraksha comes from Rudra, a name of Lord Shiva, and aksha, meaning eyes. The Shiva Purana and the Devi Bhagavata Purana describe how these beads arose from the tears of Shiva after a long meditation for the welfare of all beings. Botanically, they are the seeds of the Elaeocarpus ganitrus tree, found mainly in the Himalayan foothills of India and Nepal and in parts of Indonesia. For thousands of years, rishis and seekers have used them for japa, meditation and spiritual protection.
Mukhi means face. Every bead carries natural vertical lines running from the top hole to the bottom, and the number of lines decides its mukhi, from one to twenty-one. Beads of one to fourteen mukhi are the ones most commonly worn. In Vedic Astrology, each mukhi is tied to a ruling deity and a planet, which is exactly why the same bead cannot be prescribed for every problem. The lines must be natural, deep and clear. Lines carved artificially do not create a genuine Rudraksha mukhi.
1 Mukhi (Sun, Lord Shiva): Extremely rare and powerful. It supports focus, self-confidence, leadership and spiritual growth, and is usually suggested to people in positions of authority and serious seekers.
2 Mukhi (Moon, Ardhanarishvara): Associated with emotional balance, peace of mind and harmony between partners.
3 Mukhi (Mars, Agni Dev): Traditionally worn to release guilt, fear and low confidence, and to restore energy and drive.
4 Mukhi (Mercury, Lord Brahma): Linked to learning, memory and communication. It is popular with students, teachers and writers.
5 Mukhi (Jupiter, Kalagni Rudra): The most widely worn bead. It supports calm, wisdom and general well-being, and it suits almost everyone, especially beginners.
6 Mukhi (Venus, Lord Kartikeya): Connected with willpower, creativity and harmony in love and family life.
7 Mukhi (Saturn, Goddess Mahalakshmi): Worn for financial stability and relief from obstacles linked to Saturn.
8 Mukhi (Rahu, Lord Ganesha): Associated with removing sudden hurdles, delays and Rahu-related confusion.
9 Mukhi (Ketu, Goddess Durga): Linked to courage, protection and renewed energy.
10 Mukhi (Lord Vishnu): Considered a protective bead against negative influences. It is not tied to a single planet.
11 Mukhi (Lord Hanuman): Supports boldness, discipline and decisiveness.
12 Mukhi (Sun): Linked to leadership, radiance and administrative success.
13 Mukhi (Kamadeva): Associated with charm, attraction and harmony in relationships.
14 Mukhi (Devmani): Associated with intuition, foresight and sound decisions. Traditions differ on its ruling planet, so guidance matters here.
Gauri Shankar is a pair of beads naturally joined together, symbolising Shiva and Parvati, and is worn for marital harmony and family unity. The Ganesh Rudraksha has a natural trunk-like ridge and is worn for learning and removal of obstacles.

Start with the problem you want to address, then check the matching mukhi against the planetary positions in your Kundli. A bead linked to a weak planet in your chart may support you, while a bead linked to a troublesome planet needs caution. A Kundli reading, and where relevant a palm reading, gives a far more reliable answer than a generic list. If you are unsure, the 5 mukhi is the safest starting point. Avoid wearing several random mukhis together.
To identify a genuine bead, look for deep, natural lines that run cleanly from top to bottom, and a rough, irregular surface with a naturally formed hole. Be careful with beads that look too perfect or polished. The popular water-sink test is unreliable, because density varies and fake beads can sink too. Buy from a trusted source, and for rare mukhis ask for a lab or X-ray certificate.
Day and time: Choose a Monday morning, the day of Lord Shiva, or an auspicious occasion such as Shravan, Mahashivratri or a good muhurat. Bathe first and sit facing east or north.
Purification: Wash the bead with clean water, then with Gangajal or raw milk, and wipe it gently.
Energisation: Place the bead before an image of Lord Shiva, light a lamp, offer bel patra if possible, and chant Om Namah Shivaya 108 times. A specific beej mantra for the mukhi can be added under proper guidance.
Thread and metal: Wear the bead on a red or yellow thread, or set in silver, gold or copper, so that it touches the skin. It is usually worn at the neck or on the wrist. A mala for japa has 108 beads plus one guru bead.
Keep the bead clean and apply a little sesame oil or ghee every few weeks to prevent it from drying and cracking. Traditionally, it is removed before visiting a cremation ground or attending a funeral, and it is also advised to avoid alcohol and non-vegetarian food while wearing it. Do not wear a bead that someone else has used, and do not lend yours. If a bead cracks or breaks, immerse it respectfully in flowing water or leave it at a Shiva temple and replace it.
Rudraksha is a spiritual aid rooted in faith and tradition. It supports discipline and mental peace, but it does not replace medical, legal or professional advice.

Can anyone wear Rudraksha?
Yes. Men, women, elders and children can wear Rudraksha. The 5 mukhi suits almost everyone, while rarer mukhis are better chosen after a Kundli check.
Can I wear Rudraksha while bathing or sleeping?
It can be worn daily, including during a bath. Many people remove it at night to protect the bead from damage and to keep it away from harsh soaps and perfumes.
How long does Rudraksha take to show results?
There is no fixed timeline. The effects are subtle and gradual, and they are strongest when the bead is worn with faith, regular prayer and a disciplined routine.
Can I wear two different mukhi together?
Yes, combinations such as 5 mukhi with 7 mukhi are sometimes worn, provided the planets involved are not in conflict in your chart. It is best to seek guidance first.
Which Rudraksha is best for stress and a restless mind?
The 2 mukhi, linked to the Moon, and the 5 mukhi, linked to Jupiter, are traditionally suggested for calm and mental peace.
Rudraksha rewards those who choose it thoughtfully and wear it with respect. The right Rudraksha mukhi, worn with the correct vidhi and a steady spiritual routine, can become a quiet source of strength through every phase of life.
